This cosy Victorian three-bedroomed self catering holiday cottage sleeps up to five guests right at the centre of Brancaster Staithe, a thriving fishing community in the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Samphire Cottage was built around 1860 and originally formed part of the local coastguard station. Located on the coast road, close to stunning beaches and moments away from the Coast Path, this is a perfect base to explore the beauty of North Norfolk.

Close to the beach

The cottage is 300m from the Staithe (harbour). Brancaster Beach is an easy, 40 minute walk or five minute trip in the car, and at low tide it extends for miles! A little further afield, the beaches and seafronts of Hunstanton, Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea are close by – you can even take a long walk to them and get the Coastliner bus back. Kings Lynn is 20 miles away, and Norwich a little over an hour's drive.

Food and drink

Just down the road from Samphire Cottage is The Jolly Sailors (a family, dog & muddy boot friendly pub with locally-brewed beer and good food to eat in or take away) or five minutes walk the other way, The White Horse Inn (gastro-pub/restaurant with some of the finest dining room views in Norfolk). Locally-caught mussels and shellfish are sold within the village, and for sunny summer evenings there's a charcoal barbecue in the cottage's south-facing enclosed rear garden.

Nature on the doorstep

Nature lovers can marvel at the geese, oyster catchers and curlew of the Burnham Deepdale salt marshes, RSPB Titchwell is only a short cycle ride, and Wild Ken Hill is 10 miles away. The grounds of Holkham Hall and Royal Sandringham are in easy reach and boat trips from nearby Blakeney or Morston Quay will take you to see the seals at Blakeney Point. Take in the sunsets from the Staithe itself, or soak in the starry skies in this, one of the best dark sky locations in Britain.

Definitely a ‘must visit’ while staying at Samphire Cottage if you have even just the slightest interest in gardens for #wildlife. Natural Surroundings (@nat.surroundings) has over 20 demonstration #wildlifegarden areas, from small plots to vast water meadows, and they sell the plants too from their nursery. Ever wondered if those bee hotels work? Well, the answer is clearly yes! Great cafe as well. Near Holt in North Norfolk, 35 mins or so by car from #BrancasterStaithe.

A little postscript to my earlier post: the worn and rotted sleeper path in the garden at the cottage is now as good as new, using the ‘please help yourself’ free timber that was previously the supports to the old, timber Brancaster boardwalk.

As the amazing new Brancaster boardwalk nears completion (a few side rails and several seats to go in still), the contractors are keen to give away wood from the old one (some of which is still very solid). Turns out to be a perfect match, size for size, with the worn out sleeper path at Samphire Cottage (and the inside of a 2013 Landrover too!). This is Warham Camp Iron Age Hill Fort, between Warham and Wighton, inland a little from Wells Next the Sea. I’ve been coming to this part of Norfolk for years but had no idea this was here, until seeing @prof_alice_roberts here on the BBC’s Digging for Britain recently. Staggering - apparently the best preserved Iron Age fort in Norfolk. Sadly a small amount of the unbelievable rain of the past few days has found it’s way into the twin bedroom at the cottage - probably backing up in a valley gutter around the dormer window. I’ll be there to check it all over at the weekend. I know several other properties and businesses have been affected too - the sheer volume of water that fell from the sky was unprecedented. This unlikely looking metal pole is a unique (in Britain) remnant from the Cold War. Known locally as the Whirlygig, it was used in the early 1950s by the US Air Force to launch scaled-down, radio controlled aircraft out over Stiffkey Marshes as target practice for gunners training at the nearby camp. The models were tethered to this arm and went around the circular track at up to 85mph before being released! New fire safety rules apply to all holiday lets in England (cottages, yurts, glamping pods - and anything on AirBnB) from 1 October. Exit doors must open from inside without using a key, there must be a smoke alarm in every room and these must all be interlinked, dry powder fire extinguishers are no longer allowed, some form of emergency lighting is required and there must be clear fire instructions displayed. You’ll be pleased to hear we have all this in place at Samphire Cottage already - we want to keep you safe :)

Last time we were here we visited the @rescuewoodenboats museum at Stiffkey and met master boatbuilder David. One of his amazing feats was to rebuild the stunning twin layer steam-bent mahogany engine cover used in the restoration the former lifeboat and Dunkirk small ship, the Lucy Lavers. Every year, @hunstanton_rnli have to rescue stranded holiday makers from #scoltheadisland or the #wreck at #brancasterbeach when they get caught out by the fast-moving tides. This #hovercraft - just one of four used by the RNLI around the whole of Britain is often the tool of choice. The impressive launching tractor is used to get the #inshorelifeboat into the water when that is called out on a shout at sea.

Wells next the Sea last week… brand new lobster pots, The Maltings and the great new outdoor seating at @groundbybtoi - great coffee and ‘the best’ sausage rolls (according to @britishgq ). At low tide, Brancaster beach stretches for miles (1st photo). But beware, as the tide quickly covers it - second photo is four hours later (and still not the top of the tide). The tide goes in and out twice a day over a 12 hour period. As it starts to come in it will cover the beach faster than you can run - take care :) . #brancasterbeach #tides #hightide #norfolkcoast

After talking about doing this for years finally, I walked out to #scoltheadisland today. Only to be attempted by those familiar with the tides and how they move through the creeks, needs a good pair of waders and ideally a dry day. Started that way - but heavy snow on the way back! A little trip out yesterday to the wonderful @hortico_garden_emporium at @droveorchards - just along the coast from the cottage. As well as a well-stocked indoor and outdoor plant selection they have lovely artwork and cards from @pocockstheartmonger. I loved the plant pot lights over the till area - made using bits from @creativecables.uk. Also dropped in on @cider_barn_vintage - always worth a visit.

A trip to Norwich - just an hour’s drive from Samphire Cottage to the very good park&ride at Norwich Airport. We dropped in to the Norfolk Heritage Centre, finding more history of the coastguard station we were once part of, before mooching around the quirky streets and shops of The Lanes, walking up to the cathedral and alongside the river.

This is an old photo but shows what an extra high tide looks like at Burnham Deepdale and Brancaster Staithe. There are higher than normal tides likely the next couple of days - be wary about where you park or the paths you take.
